What pops? Are we talking about a sound, or a movement (e.g. the shifter pops out of gear)? If we're talking about a sound, from where?

So, you're in first, depress the clutch, and start to move the shifter and it pops out on its own?

This is either a problem with cable adjustment or internal (transaxle).

Could be the cable mounts getting loose or something like that...the clutch system is pretty simple, just get under the hood and follow the cables from the center of the firewall to the transmission. See if anything is loose, rubbing, whatever. Like anthraxnsb said, look for an adjustment and try that out.

On my car, I had a broken front motor mount. Sometimes when you gave it enough gas in the lower gears, it seemed like the motor was rocking around when you let off the gas and causing the shifter to violently pop out of gear as soon as you hit the clutch. But you could probably tell if you had a broken motor mount.
