Default Clanking Noise from Engine

I finally got my newly purchased Sprint started this morning.
I noticed a clanking noise after the car was running for about 10 seconds. Every time it clanks, the car loses a little power (like a miss).
I don't think it's a rod knock (it doesn't sound like any rod knock I've ever heard) It's loud (you can hear it in the car) and it only clanks once every couple of seconds or so.

I decided to pull the plug wires to see if it was coming from a single cylinder.
I pulled cylinder one, the car died.
I pulled cylinder two, the clanking stopped and the car actually seemed to run better, but with an intermittent drop in RPMs followed by a slow, progressive increase in RPMs.
I pulled cylinder three, the car died.

So, what is potentially wrong with cylinder two (broken piston?)?

That sh*t's not even funny. I just wasted a click and about 30 seconds reading and responding to a lame attempt at a joke. Try harder. Please.

IDK why I'm even asking the question. The motor is coming apart regardless.

Have you compression tested it? Are you getting any blowby? If the piston is broken, you'd think there would be a lot of blowby at a minimum. Other possibilities- valve hitting piston because a lifter is locking up or something? Exhaust valve hanging up and combustion popping out of the exhaust valve (a friend's LT1 actually had exhaust valves that didn't seal very well and let the combustion event pop out the port). I know nothing about the car so I can't be very specific.

On the plus side- time for forged pistons and rods, a metal head gasket, ARP studs, springs/retainers and a cam. Maybe a stroker crank too.

vtec joke is lame, its something I heard back in 2000. You can't even post a thread in Mitsu tech without the vtec or crankwalk card. Maturity level here has drop to a low time low.

Cory like Jordan asked did you run a compression test yet? ...I know you have a compression tester. That's the only real thing I could suggest in doing if you haven't done so. It's wierd that it does it every few seconds and not intermediate... could it be a valve sticking?

I, too, was kidding. It really just wasn't funny. I can try to laugh. I mean, if I think about it for a while, I might begin to daydream about something with some comedic value, but I don't know. It's tough. Wait!
...no, nothing.

Anyway, there's what seems to be good news.

I prepared to tear the motor down and began removing parts. After popping the valve cover off I noticed that the valve lash was adjusted manually. This surprised me, because I thought I had read that the turbo Sprints had hydraulic lifters.

But, then I noticed the exhaust valve in cylinder two was missing the nut for the lash adjuster. The rocker was plenty loose and I was somewhat relieved. What concerned me was not only that the nut was probably bouncing around the head (I couldn't find it, though), but also that this head was purportedly rebuilt by Clearwater Cylinder Head, and if they forgot to torque the adjusting nut properly (or if they actually forgot to install the nut), what else did they forget?

Anyway, I happened to have the proper sized nut on hand, and so I installed and started the car up. No more clanking, although the engine is pretty loud. I may need to adjust all the valves.

Thanks for the help, though.

P.S. really, really, unfunny.

VTEK?...I guess they don't make jokes like they used to. You know with actual humor.

But good to see you fixed it that would suck balls to buy a car then have it crap on you the next week. I didnt know you were gonna build it. Id like to see that, make a thread for your build I sure would like to see how it goes. And I agree with jordan, make it a stroker, lol

I'm not building it (I love stock internals). What I meant was that the motor was coming apart to uncover the source of the clanking. Lucky for me I didn't get very far.

My plans are to restore it (almost fully) and lightly modify it (boost gauge, MBC, 2.5" exhaust, front mount, and a more aggressive cam). I need to do something about the tires on this car, too. They're too large and they rub. The sh*t needs a lot of work, actually. I'm trying to keep my costs way down (as usual), so it's kind of frustrating anticipating the work I need to do.

On the plus side, my body work on the hood (and respray) looks great. I'm very surprised, as this is my first attempt at body work and paint.
