a recirculating dump is quiet. an open dump is noisy. Open dump sounds like a very loud exhaust leak because that is exactly what it is. open dump sound occurs when the turbo is under boost and the wastegate has opened. it is quiet just normal driving around. the turbo whistling sounds are not heard through an open dump. turbo whistle is only heard when the exhaust pipe is straight pipe with no muffler or cat. you dont really hear any tubo whistle at full throttle its more heard at light cruise speeds. if you really want to here it have the muffler tip at a right angle to the car. that way when you drive by cars or a wall you will here the sound magnified as it bounces off. very cool sound actually. IMHO this would be cool with 2.5 inch pipe, 3.0 is too loud to deal with.

So the muffler can play at part in the turbo whistle at low speeds? Ive got 3" straight pipe all the way back into a universal muffler and i cant hear the turbo except through the intake. Oh well.

Whats the pros/cons between recirc o2 housing and dump tube? other than the noise that is, and is the noise of a dump too loud to drive daily? Any performance differences?

this also happens in the suby world. depending the downpipe style, cat or not, thickness of downpipe, wrapped downpipe, etc... helps the sound of the turbo spooling through the exhaust. it's very common on no cat, bellmouth downpipe subies.

straight pipe, no muffler or cat like said numerous times.

there is no difference to an open dump o2 housing other than the noise, thats all its for.

just like people who want to vent the bov and hear the turbo whistle....noise. that is all. there is no performance gain from it. you dont need them to cure boost creep and it doesnt help anything.

Probly for the same reason they get vented BOVs, to make as much noise as possibe and to show any pedestrians that your car is boosted.
