Default is it worth it?

ok well today i went and looked at a 98 gst. at first glance it looks like a nice car. very clean interior. starts and runs. 102000 miles. no knocks and very little (if any at all) smoke. well i took it for a test drive and found that it grinds going into 2nd and when i put it on the floor it hesitated a bit (like fuel cut). when we got back to the house, my buddy and i did a compression test and found cylinders 2-4 had 150 and cylinder 1 had 100. added a capful of oil and the compression went up to 130. so bad rings. other than that i didnt see anything else wrong. the turbo spools fine and sounded nice. oil was clean. had a small dent behind the passanger side door. so if im not mistaken im lookin at 1 bad cylinder and bad tranny. the guy was asking 4500 and i talked him down to 3800. i just want to know if anyone thinks im just asking for trouble with this.

I agree. Won't be so bad I would guess, if you can do alot of the work on your own. From the moajority of the turbo models I have driven, the 2nd gear synchros have always seemed to have that grinding issue. I guess they are just that weak and can't tolerate the abuse all that well. So basically, I would say it's kind of normal and should hold up fine as long as you don't rag on it. Mine has had a slight grind/notchiness in 2nd gear (when cold), but usually smooths out when the car is warmed up. That was when I bought the car back in 2001 with 53,000 miles on it. Car now has about 94,000 miles on it today and the tranny is still running strong.

All comes down to your driving habits and style of driving. I consider myself to be a decent driver, that can squeeze out all the performance that the car's setup can provide, without ragging the shit out of it (which in turn, can actually cause a decrease in performance).

EDIT: Have you checked some of the cars that are available here? Some of them seem to be in good shape, and for a good price. Keep checking autotrader and ebay periodically. You can find turbo models, that were adult owned, unmodified, and maintained well, for really good prices at times.

That's what I did, if you don't rush yourself something is bound to pop up. I found one completely stock with no major issues, just needs a good tune up.

Good Luck

well the bank is finacing a 98 gst. we were approved for 6590 which is the nada value of the car. we are planning on spending around 4000 on a car and the rest on modding my gs and the gst.

The Reasons I Find This Transaction to Be Problematic

1. $3800 and needs new rings (by the way, what's compression supposed to be on a 2g?)
2. GS-T, not X/$3800 and needs new rings
3. Has 102,000 miles/GS-T, not X/$3800 and needs new rings
4. Needs new 2nd gear synchro (which, more or less, means a transmission rebuild, because you would be an ass not to do so at 102,000 miles and the transmission opened up)/Has 102,000 miles/GS-T, not X/$3800 and needs new rings
5. Has a dent (I don't really care, I just wanted to add to the list)/Needs new 2nd gear synchro/Has 102,000 miles/GS-T, not X/$3800 and needs new rings

I'd offer $2000.

no such thing as needing new rings. once these motors have the low compression it always means the piston and cylinder wall is hurt. needs at least a shortblock and tranny rebuild. not a good deal.

+1 dont buy it. if your getting financed for that much, find something with lower miles and less mods that's more relaible. Go to www.powerautosales.com Before I bought my car, I almost bought a car from these guys. They look immaculate
