Can I ask you a question... why 3" why not 2.5"? What are your power goals?

How much you gain will be solely on what type of setup you run... every car will perform differently depending on what add-ons/mods you have. You'll feel a difference but then it a few days it'll feel like its just normal. Couldn't tell you what kind of gain you would get... every car is different and modded differently.

Well, with that in mind what kind of exhaust setup are you trying to run. I see you want 3" but are you running a high flow cat... test pipe...
Just to let you know, exhaust shops will not work on your car if it doesn't have a catalytic converter. Been there... I had a 2.5" Testpipe on 2 1g's I've owned. So your best bet if you want 3" is to get a cat-back system down in 3" or simply buy one. Having one made is somewhat cheaper. Get a 3" Testpipe or High Flow Cat if you prefer. Saw your looking into a 3" downpipe get that as well.

...some are using electric cutouts

on a t25 the car feels like ass on the top. But its a needed step for when you go bigger.

That's just not true. Every flange and pipe on my 3" turbo-back was welded by an exhaust shop and there was no cat. They did not even mention the missing cat.

Incidentally, it was only $30 to weld every flange and pipe in the system.

Where did you take it and when? Because now they won't. I have a place in Orlando install a different exhaust on the 92 Eclipse and they didn't even say anything about the testpipe and they saw it. But Rainbow Mufflers on 38th would not work on my 92 Eclipse since it didn't have a cat. For $30 you must of known the owner, any average Joe they probably won't do it. Especially for $30.00. Most exhaust shops won't do it, you might have some mom & pop ones that will and will do it under the table.

I suppose I'd rather not say where I took it, inasmuch as it is apparently against the law, but I took it to a place that has about 10 locations in Pinellas County. I took it there less than a year ago, but I don't remember exactly what month.

I did not know the owner. That's a standard cost to have them just weld sh*t together. I just sent my neighbor to them (less than a month ago) and they charged him $40 for the exact same task.

Not to be an ass, but you are really worrying way too much about little things that do not matter.

Get the exhaust, whether it be 2.5 inch or 3, its just preference really.
