What the hell are you asking? And what does the headgasket have to do with an oil leak.

You wont be at zero compression with no headgasket, but its not going to run if you try to start it.

...head gasket cover...

What would prompt a cluster-f*ck like that?

Do you think the valve cover gasket is bad? If so, then take the valve cover off and replace the gasket. You're not going to do anything to your engine by taking it off, replacing the gasket, and installing it.

DSMInduction was referring to the possibility that you might take it off and start your car, which clearly wasn't your intention.

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket if you see oil leaking around the top of your block between the valve cover and all around that area. Could it be a damaged oil pan? Crankshaft front and/or rear main oil seals? Take it to a shop.

ahhh, sounded like he wanted to start a car, cause he asked if he would have compression. whatever, nah it wont hurt to take it off if the car isnt running. and make sure to scrape all the gasket off of it before putting the new one on, and dont use that gasket sealer crap.

What year, model, engine, etc is the car you're working on? You should fill out your profile with details on your car, or at the least post what kind of car it is so we can give you good advice.

The valve cover gasket is a relatively harmless remove and reinstall job, not much you can hurt. Just tighten the bolts down very lightly, too tight and it will crack. If you haven't found it yet and you're working with a DSM, check www.vfaq.com for help on most basic repairs.
