Default Evo 16G- Stock Injectors- 21 psi- No Knock

It's no fun giving it all away in the thread title, but hell, it does make for a good thread title.

Kris (Black Venom) and I decided that we should go out and get his car going on a good baseline tune, seeing as how he's selling it and I'm sure whoever buys it will want to be able to go WOT. He'd just been babying it around at part throttle since we installed the turbo.

Anyway, he got it out on our test circuit (multimillion dollar facility that has a strange resemblance to a series of I-75 on ramps ) and did a series of 3rd gear pulls. It was still on the factory maps, running pig rich 9.3:1 AFRs and breaking up above 6 grand from the sheer amount of fuel.

That was no good, so I leaned it out on the higher load maps where the car spends all of its time in boost, raising it to an amazingly lean 10.1:1 AFR . Hey, all I'm doing is plugging numbers into the stock ecu here, no wideband to confirm it, so I play it pretty damn safe. I did a bit of fooling with the timing map too- smoothed and lowered the last few rows ending up with a peak of 19 degrees timing and the torque peak at 16-17 degrees timing, all on the highest load level of course.

We went for another set of test runs and it was running beautifully at 21 psi with zero knock across the board. We probably could have gone up to 22-23 psi if it weren't for the fact that the 450's were peaking at about 95% injector duty cycle.

I will admit that he has a non-turbo FPR in his car. Raises the fuel pressure to 48 psi, makes 450's act like 510's, raises the base pressure high enough to avoid the trouble people usually have with fuel pressure overrun on big pumps. My favorite junkyard mod.

Yeah, just burning chips still. I'm looking at getting a real-time emulator that would let me tune without stopping and pulling over to burn a chip, but I need to pay off the credit card first.

We were focusing on the full boost area yesterday on the stock maps, depending on how long he owns it before he sells it we'll probably convert it over to double-range maps to get better tuning ability and fine tune the rest of it. It can still hit a bit of tip-in knock in some part-throttle part-boost situations just because it's in a weird spot in the timing map, but switching it over to double-range maps and doing a bit of lower-load tuning would take care of that.
He also might be installing some Evo 8 injectors, in which case we might try to push for a bit more boost.

Heh, keep it just as long as it takes for Kris to sell his car, then sell it. No need for two very similar cars to be on the market at the same time. You're still on the Evo 16g, right?

Good point. I really dont want to sell it. Im working on putting it as close to stock as I can bare with, so I can start over and do things right, instead of fixing someone elses mistakes. I still need a new tranny, then I want to rebuild the motor or at least replace all the seals that are leaking... Then paint and body work and Im sure Ill be happy with her!

Id still like to get my car chipped since its got the eprom, but I might wait till later...

Just get your ECU socketed and I can help you out with that. I wouldn't expect any tuning miracles, I'm not an expert tuner... but you can get a car running well pretty easily with the right tools. Honestly the part throttle stuff is the most time consuming, but with the switch to dual range maps you get some pretty darn good fuel and timing maps that don't need too much additional work.
