In my opinion it's an old wive's tale and that any improvement is either in some sort of cleaning effect that could only really work once (and even this I doubt) or more likely a psychological effect, in that people are likely to drive more sensibly with the additive in the tank.

Right, it makes the fuel more viscous. The gas mileage increase could very well be from the cleaning affect that the acetone additive has. My dad has seen a definate increase over the past month, which is less than 4,000 miles.
He's old, so it's not like he's driving differently (like your typical 04' Z06 owner).
If it plateaus, I will ask him to stop it and see if the gas mileage falls at a similar rate as when it raised, which would tell us that it was strictly the cleaning effect.
He claims it will fall at the same rate because the fact that it makes the fuel more viscous makes the fuel burn in it's entirety, not wasting gas. Thus, better gas mileage. Yes, of course, how you drive the car is a big factor.
I'm talking about like a zephyr hills water bottle clear plastic. THis is 4oz per gas tank approx. I'm talking about when you store it in your house in a concentrated form, it will eat the bottom of the bottle away and be all over your shelf/floor.
I did not mean the word clear, I meant opaque. The plastic on the tips of the injectors/fuel filter are opaque plastics.
