GUAGING INTEREST: ECU Socketing and Re-Capping
This thread is to guage interest in replacing leaking capacitors and/or socketing DSM ECUs.
Information about the capping:
* A fairly common problem with DSM ECUs is leaking/blown capacitors over time, especially in older ECUs. The capacitors leakage can also destroy traces on the ECUs motherboard.
Information about socketing:
* Desolder the stock EEPROM in the ECU and solder in a ZIF(Zero Insertion Force) socket, allowing you to replace the EEPROM with a custom burn and tune your car.
* For me to remove your stock EEPROM, I have to remove the legs to the chip, therefore rendering it useless. This is where Jordan Y. comes in. He would burn you a stock EEPROM and/or light/mild customized EEPROM.
* I have to remove a little of the motherboards coating to desolder/solder; so I replace any remove coating with polyurethane spray to protect the motherboard and prevent corrosion.
Pictures of an ECU I did for a friend of Jordan's:

These are the capacitors that fail:

Jordan Y. will post a reply and/or edit my thread to add his part on ECU tuning.

A lot of the national guys don't want you to send them your ECU to be socketed, they prefer somebody local. AFAIK the closest guy who'll do it is in Orlando. So with something like DSMlink, or a Keydiver chip (where he won't do it for you at all) you could get it done locally by Aaron.
As another option, I'm considering doing basic chips for cheap. I don't want to step on any toes, considering all the good things keydiver has done for the community, so I wouldn't offer up the full list of things he puts in his chips. I'm thinking of doing basic chips with the important stuff- change idle, rev limit, injector comp and deadtime, fuel cut elimination, 2g maf compensation for the few people running those. Basic changes that add up to a huge improvement in the drivability and ease of tuning of a car. I plan to make a post outlining how you can do all of these things yourself in the near future, but for people who don't want to make the investment in time and equipment I think it would help everybody still stuck with an SAFC as their main tuning device get their car running better with as little piggyback intervention as possible.

I need an EPROM or maybe Im lucky and mine already is. I havent looked yet. *crosses fingers*
