Question eclipse running like crap

i have a 1992 eclipse with the SOHC motor. the rpms at idle speed realy vary alot like from 500 to 1.5k i dont know why. it dosent matter if the ac is on or not. it just vibrates when the ac is on if the rps drop. plus there is a major power lag somewhere. i am guessing its a sensor problem but i dont know which one. any ideas?

Does that platform use a MAS or MAF?

Could be the source of the problem.

It could be a number of things....It could be fouled spark plugs, faulty/fouled oxygen sensor, a defective or gunked-up idle speed control (ISC) motor, leaking injectors, a cracked vacuum hose, or a damaged intake manifold gasket. High idle can also be caused by a throttle cable or cruise control cables that are too tight.

Try starting out with the easiest first and work your way down to the hardest/costliest. I'd check also to see if your throttle cbale might be loose.

how tight should the throttle cable be? i will check the vacuum hoses again. i tried upping the regular idle from 900 to 1200 in hopes that the low idle would go up from 500 to 800 but now it has a high of 1200 and a low of 500. when the ac is on its very difficult to get it in to first gear without letting it die.

in two weeks (payday) its getting:

mounts
head gasket
intake gasget
exhaust gasket
cap&rotar
plugs&wires
valve job
and anything else i have money for
