Default starter issues 91 engine in 88 body

Ok TR so here's the scoop:
-91 engine
-88 gearbox
-88 chassis

so the starter finally took a shit on me, and I had it replaced. I bought a starter for a 91 rx7, thinking that the starter teeth and the ring gear have to match up. SUPPOSEDLY when the starter was first installed it would crank right up, but now it sounds funny, like a harsh gear-to-gear noise and the motor cranks slowly. is there a discrepancy between model years and what starter to use? is my ring gear fucked?

thanks

it de pends on what is is doing i had some wat of the same set up most rebild starters from autoparts crank fine at first than they start dying for some reason i did have a problem with the cheap aluminum wires from factory is an old car and im sure never replaced .. so i would try that cuz that did bhelp the situation and i used 2 gauge wire and if its not much trouble a few more grounds attached from the chassis or firewall to engine are not bad investment .. so i guess check connection and if anything try to go to a junk yard and find a few of them that could be potentionally worht buying try them.. u should have a difference .. also make sure battery is extremely good.. rotary are known to start right away on good compresison but ones miles are on them compression is fine but a bit low not like factory and they tend to take a few more turns to start up .. i could go on but ill bored u... lmk if u eed any help hope that helped u

also forgot to add make sure ur using the right starte make sure it fits and it reaches the gears had a confuse time between years due to racing application we use at times and automatic started instead of regular 5 speed.. also has to do with the off set on the starter bolts the are a bit different .. and always check the signal wire signal wire is known to be loose and loose connection,.
