Cool i need opinions.

i have never owned or know anything about rx7's.i have however come across a CLEAN 87gsl with 18 inch rims.he says 2500 but i got him down to 2000.the car is veryvery clean for the prize.the exterior is all but almost perfect.and the engine turned on instantly,it has webers, exhaust the whole shebang.but i know nothing about rotarys being a honda driver all my life.what would be signs of something wrong with the 13b??what should i look for in this car as far as defects??what type of support is there for these cars??how easy would it be to get someone to switch out and install a decently new engine and how much would it cost??etc...i just need guidance.being a puerto rican born and raised i know what these cars can do.hell 510's with 13b's are the norm back home but still i need help.ohh and is 2000 a good price for one of these in the u.s.a.??they would sell a 87 for over 3500 back home.

sorry bout the lack of responses. I just picked up an 87 a few weeks ago for a grand. It is not in the condition yours appears to be in. I think 2 would be worth it as long as the car feels good when you drive it. I would check the fluids, i know it sounds basic but you'd be suprised how many people dont top off when trying to sell something they wanna get rid of. look at the radiator hoses, thermostat housing, water pump. The rotaries have issues with overheating, so id check to see if these parts look new, messed up, or normal wear and tear. The guy your dealing with prob kept it up a bit better than mines PO, but you wanna make sure. when you turn it on, watch how long it takes to warm up, watch the idle and the water temp/oil pressure. Make a note of how much these change while your driving it so you know what to expect. Since ive had mine the oil pressure stay up a lot and the water temp never gets to 1/4. Also look for rust under the car, wheel wells, back glass, and spare tire area. Just general stuff. If you go to rx7club.com, there's a bunch of guys and faqs and DIY stuff. Its an awesome site for getting help with the 7

without at least providing pictures, no one can really tell you what a car is worth. forget the rims, and all of the flashy add ons. they are just that, flashy. if the car hasn't been maintained properly, which most rotaries have NOT, then it's not worth much at all.

it's an s4 model, so it's lower power off the bat. i think you may have meant GXL, not gsl, so that means it's 5 lug with 4pot calipers. so that's a bonus. just like any old car, you need to check it over for problems. let the car get to normal operating temps, and see if it has trouble starting when it's hot. we have stickies regarding upkeep and things to look out for. i suggest you do some research. https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/m...-8-owners.html

well.it has a new radiator and battery, with new hoses all around.the only real rust on the car is a tiny 3/4 of a inch spot on the rear right roof corner.at idle it sounded good but the car had no gas and turned off,he told me he changed the fuel pump a year ago because he runs the car with the tank empty whenever it is that he rides it.its been sitting on his friends backyard now for 3 months, but his friend turns it on on a daily basis, and its a gxl{my bad}.thanks for the advice thou

you should bring some 87 octane over and let the car run. you need to see what it idles at, while idling. if it's anywhere over 1100 then someone is hiding something. you have a good base for a swap, but if it runs drive it until it quits. if you know anyone that can disassemble engines, you could rebuild it for $500 easily.

I aggree with the Captin. Im looking at doing a swap someday when my engine stops working. There are quite a few options, only limits being your mechanical skill and cash to dump into it. I would like to know where the 500 dollar rebuild kits are? That would make my day. Best of luck to ya, lemme know if you get it

When a rotary "blows" it is usually only seals. Unless you're an idiot and you drive it around without coolant/oil and you warp a rotor and rotor housing. Rotaries WILL run with a blown seal. In this case, I'm talking about your basic everyday blown rotary. So here you are, your day has been made.
