check out racingconsepts.com
not cheap but better then stock fuel economy, very reliable, and 11.7s at 120 with a stock motor, 11.2s at 132 on a 100 shot.
or the 1.8 it can hold 400+ on turbo stock internals, actually theres one with a 30r running 125mph in the quarter on a completely stock motor.

^this is where i am going to need proof. i built a 1.8l turbo motor and had 400 at the wheels. MY build was over over 6k in the engine bay. There is no possible way to achieve 400 even at the crank on a stock motor.

O.P. If you want to build a cheap and reliable 1.8l motor then here are some suggestions.
-1994 block
-1999 head
-wiseco pistons
-crower rods
-metal head gasket
-miata link ecu pretuned OR megasquirt ecu
-550cc injectors OR higher
-walboro 225 fuel pump
-basic bolt on turbo kit

that list you are looking at 3k easy, for a reliable build. if you want loads of power, you will need a bigger turbo and a good tune. the 1.8l is a good turbo application, but NO the stock motor will not handle more then 7lbs reliably.

yea 400hp out of a 1.8 stock internals my fucking ass.

The easiest 1.8 to swap is the 94-97 1.8L. Although the 99-00 1.8l has a better Flowing head you cant adjust the timing.

A stock 1.8 can take like 12-14psi and make 250-275Whp. build the motor and they can make 600+.

you can turbo a 1.8 for 1500-6000 depending on the parts and end power goals.

Damn Captin came in while i was writing that. I agree with him 100% except for the 7psi BS.. i know plenty of 12-15psi Completly stock internal 1.8s with 10-50k of turbo miles on them.

I forget which year they bumped the compression but i think it was 99+ so avoid high boost on those.

block and head are the best choice.
Wiseco and the best pistions.. i like the 1s from FM.
Crower rods are alittle pricey.. I like Mtuned rods for a budget build $349 and good for 600hp
I perfer Megasquirt

Other then that hes dead on.

yeah i have seen quite a few 12-15psi turbo application stock internals miatas, but MOST of them had upgraded fuel injectors and a few things here and there. I boosted my 2002 special edition way back when and ran it at 10psi and the clutch lasted about a month. i believe fully in building every reliability mod "required" with every power mod you add on. to each there own i suppose, but you are right and more experienced then i am.

and i am not sure, but i think the compression bump was either 99 or 2000. just remember that all the extra power is meaningless without a way to get the power to the ground. suspension, bracing, clutch, flywheel, and tires take the car to another level.

Oh of course i agree 100%.. Stock injectors your limited to like 7-8psi on the 1.8 and like 6psi on the 1.6.

And a clutch is needed even at 6psi.. Shit my stock clutch cant take a 65shot on a bottle with only 650psi..

Im not sure im more experienced then you but i was saying that stuff under the impression that he knows what hes doing.

If he can do the 1.8 swap he should know enough to put a better clutch and Bigger injectors on it.
