crazy idle problem
1990 rx7 s5.
I know rotories have a "dipping" idle...even the stock ones don't idle real smooth, its like they fluctuate +/- 100 rpms at idle....
could be wrong, but thats the way I've seen most of them running..
anyway, so the idle I'm trying to fix dips down so far that the car damn near stalls. First thing in the morning, it will stall. The rest of the day, it just gets really really really close. Its gotten worse and worse. It used to just do it sometimes. hell, some days it wouldn't do it at all, but over the past few months, its gotten worse. Now, it is an everytime type of thing.
any ideas as to what is causing it?
it seems to run "better" with the TPS unplugged. I'm pretty sure it is just seeming like it runs better because it is dumping more gas, just like any other car, Right?
It also doesn't seem to have the nuts that it used to. I remember this car used to just scream down the interstate, it really took off once you got much over 50... I don't know if it is because the other cars I deal with have gotten faster, or if this one has just lost its nuts....
I don't know if those two issues are related, but maybe...
let me know if you need to know anything else about the car.
thanks

k, I've read through both of those... vacuum leaks, and a bad tps seem to be the main issues.
From what I can tell with the carb cleaner/starter fluid vacuum check, it isn't a vacuum leak.
I'll hit the tps with my multi meter tonight and see whats up.

If you are sure about there not being a vacuum leak, tps is the next culprit that comes to mind as the links suggest. While not being proficient in FC's, the FD has the tps, and two more screws, the air adjustment screw that is on the underside of the throttle body, and also an adjustment screw on the top of the throttle body. Good luck and happy hunting.

Well, like most great answers in life, it could. But your symptoms point to adjusting everything else properly first (TPS, ect), then worrying about the other what ifs second. Like I said before, I know third gens not second gens and in one of the threads I read I think it said the 2nd gen has 2 tps's? I have no idea. Dont know if the following links will help. First one is about the second gen, the one following is step by step how to adjust everything on the third gen.

A bad TPS was my problem. All the info you need is in the FSM on how to test the TPS. If that's bad and there's no vacuum leaks, check the BACV next.
And if you're real lucky, they're both bad like mine were
