what is it that you need accomplished? is it a N/A or Turbo Model? What are your main goals for the car, such as Drag,Drift,Autocross,Daily Driver? Year, model, budget? every answer to the questions i asked will determine the path you can go down.
well its a 88 vert n/a plan on boosting it after im done with college im looking to try autocross with it and im new to the rotarys so id like someone to kinda help me work on it and stuff oh and im on a somewhat limited budget and its my DD now thanks guys

well the cheaper, more reliable route would be to save up and buy a turbo two motor/tranny/rear end and save up until you can afford the swap. boosting the n/a s4 motor is in no way gong to be cost effective nor will it be reliable on a budget. auto crossing will definitely allow you to learn the physics of the car and will help you determine whether or not boosting it will be worth it. i have seen some very clean s5 T2 swaps into verts but swaps do cost some $$$.
some things to consider would be to have the engine rebuilt, and ported. in auto cross you would want quick responsive throttle, and with a turbo you will have lag. I'm not dogging your aspirations in any way, just trying to help out. there are four stages to porting in each step higher takes away from daily drive ability. and rotaries are NOT known for their reliability as it is. heat is ALWAYS your biggest enemy. trust me have the engine rebuilt and ported and you will not be disappointed. but thats IMO so good luck with the car and welcome to the world of rotaries.

Thanks man well the motor was rebuilt in 03 and i was looking into boosting the na but i herd its not a good idea where should i look for a swap but for now i just wanna like finish body work and paint and do some low end mods to it and just kinda mess around with it untill im done with college but i dont even know where to start i went from a honda to a mazda and im already sold on it haha oh and one more thing how should my car do on gas i got like almost 100 miles to a half of tank is that bad??

no thats not bad haha. rotaries burn oil very fast too. i would suggest changing the oil at every 1500 miles if you will be driving as a daily. honestly if you're looking for a swap, i would save up and go through someone on here. most every rotary enthusiast will be more than willing to help out on here and everyone has their experiences to share. you're in a very close knit group now my friend haha if you haven't noticed the mazda forum is practically dead. but if you do wind up buying the swap from someone you are not familiar with, expect to rebuild it before installing it just to be safe.
I wouldnt use a vert for auto x.
Its the most heaviest out there.
Drifting is right about the throttle response, compared to turbo.
"four stages to porting in each step higher takes away from daily drive ability. and rotaries are NOT known for their reliability as it is"
I wouldnt say theres "4 stages",there are many stages of porting. You can still port and have a reliable engine close to stock if done correctly.
I personally think anything higher than a street port will cause problems.
On a bridge you have to knotch the rotor housings which gets real close to the water seals.
Keep in mind,On a 6 port engine. You wont have huge gains like you would on a 4 port.
RacingBeat will even tell you its not worth porting a 6 port.
Since this is your first rotary, make it a HABIT when driving to check water/oil guages once in a while.
I always check it while driving,Its very critical when owning a rotary to keep checking water temp and oil pressure/level.
On a non leaking strong rotary engine, rotary engines consume about 1 qt of oil about every 1500 miles if im correct. If your engine has leaks,You need to check it more often.
Rotary engine consume oil,if its burning oil you have problems.
If you are really interested about learning the rotary engine. The info is out there. What ever you want to do,Im sure someone else has done it.
You have to take time to read it.Dont be ignorant and not take the time to read,Your car is about reliable as you make it.If you dont know how to check or do maintenance on your rotary. You will have problems and with out the knowledge the shops will rape you,or you will start preaching to others how rotaries are pieces of shit.
I want to own a nice clean vert, congrats.
