Default Protege 5 Opinions

My wife really likes them. Thought it might be a good little family car for my wife. She wants the room of the wagon, good for kid and dogs, etc. I like they styling and appointments. I'm looking at used ones. She wants an automatic, unfortunatly. I know they aren't too quick. But are they painfully slow?
I hope to test drive one soon, but I was just wondering what other Mazda owners impressions are of them. Thanks.

I worked for a mazda dealership for a bit. I enjoyed the protege5, but would definatly get the 5 speed. The auto just seemed to suck up too much power for me. the handling is remarkable on anything made by mazda. their MPV even had great handeling.

I would definatly look into getting this car, but I would have to be the 5 speed for me.

I drove a Mazda 3 yesterday. Not bad....not that quick even with the 2.3 and 5 speed. Nice car, but would cost the same as a MAzdaspeedProtoge. Hmmm.
