The County's red light cameras are scheduled to go live today. They are going to run a 60-day warning period. They will be issuing violations to every violator including other municipalities and governmental agencies. They are also issuing them to their own vehicles. The following intersections should be operational:
ØFletcher/Bruce B Downs
ØFowler/56th Street
ØSligh/Habana
ØBrandon Blvd/Grand Regency
ØBloomingdale/Bell Shoal
ØWaters/Dale Mabry
ØWaters/Anderson

NOTE: When stopping, your front tires must be behind the thick white line just before the walking zone. If you stop with your tires on the white line, you get a ticket!
NOTE: (As someone who was caught by a camera for not making a full stop when turning right on red, it was easy to slide through at these large intersections with right hand turn lanes. Although I slowed down in the lane, the video showed I did not come to a complete stop.)

NOTE: The month of November will be a trial run, beginning in December they will start issuing traffic citations. Lakeland and Clearwater have collected a combined $1.5 million dollars in fines this year from their red light camera systems. The citations are not only for running the red light, but the most offenses are not coming to a complete stop before turning right on red and not stopping behind the white stripe before the pedestrian cross walk The citation will be issued against the owner(s) of the car. It is a fineable offense with no points issued against your license. If you fail to pay the citation, you will be called before the Red Light Code Enforcement Magistrate to show cause. If you fail to appear, the magistrate may institute daily fines till you pay the citation, county costs, and any daily fines, these daily fines can be high to gain compliance. The County will also file a lien against your property.

Counties using these cameras are using a loophole in the law to fine you which is why there are no points involved. My Uncle is an engineer for the DOT and they have absolutely nothing to do with this project as the cameras are being placed on county and not state property. If you get one of these tickets/fines you may have a hard time contesting it. From what I understand the owner of the car will be responsible for the ticket no matter who was driving.

After a little bit of research I found out it is actually the same company (Redflex) bidding for these "contracts" here in FL.

Isit fair to get ticketed by a private entity? Should u get a ticket if u barely ease past the line? I don't think it is

 

That's not the point. Running a red light is one of the single most dangerous things to do in a car. I personally think the penalty should be more severe. I see people run red lights ALL THE TIME. You obviously know that you could get a ticket for crossing the line, so why bitch about it. Just don't do it. Would you feel differently about it if an officer gave you a ticket on the spot? You'd probably complain just the same, "stupid fucking pigs, blah, blah, blah..." If someone is so ignorant as to not take the tiniest precaution to not get a ticket then maybe they shouldn't be allowed to drive anyway. At this point it comes down to whether or not you want a ticket, if you don't then grow up.

 

Ok man, I completeley agree w getting a ticket for running a redlight, but something that can't see different situations that cause people to do thing I.e. Wet roads scooting up to get the light to turn things like that its not fair! Btw I don't even live in tampa so it doesn't even effect me, just a topic of discussion

 

In Brooksville they put a few up and had them going for a couple months now. I lawl when I see people rolling through and taking off and its like a dance party strobe lights everywhere I feel like techno music should be playing. They went off at me once because I was like 3 inches over the line. I hopped up and looked out the window and was like seriously? WTF? But they only get you if you proceed because 3 photos are taken. It scares me at times because when people dont know its like they are going to rear end me because I have to come to a complete stop.
