Unhappy water leak in hatch

LOW DOWN:
-EG, big leak on right side
-recently replaced all gaskets, but leak was pre existing
-haven't added sealent to hold gaskets, but I believe that is all it does (i.e. hold them on)
-I have tried twice to get everything to line up perfectly, but my atttempts have not been successful
-changed gaskets mainly because I smelled exhaust leak into hatch (smoke bomb confirmed)

What do I do? If anyone has body alignment experience with hatches, I would greatly appreciate you expertise.
I am willing to pay, but I don't think I could afford to take it to a body shop unless all other measures fail.
