I believe one of the ways to tell is....if you turn your car on...and attempt to put water in the radiator and water comes splashing out...dont quote me on this...but Im pretty sure on it.

There is some stuff you can buy "block tester?" that you poor into your resevour, if it changes colour, the head gasket is blown.
If your exhaust smells like radiator fluid....
If your car runs like shit...
a leakdown test will also show if your headgasket is blown, by causing the resevour water to bubble from the compressed air escaping into your water jackets... also what may happen is your coolent level may rise and fall at random, your car may overheat with seemingly no cause, it (resevour) may also bubble while running.

ok my car does over heat on random.............so is it hard to change the gasket???????

If you blow the head gasket you need to have the head resurfaced at a machine shop incase the head is warped.
