My fuel pump doesn't prime but the car starts? ... Please help me out.
I have a 1991 Honda Civic Hatch Si and I have a quick question about my Fuel system...
I've had the hatch for about a year now and just realized I couldn't hear the fuel pump anymore after around 6 months of driving it. At first I thought it would be a bad fuel pump but it wasn't ... I recently installed a Walbro 255 fuel pump and I still have the same problem I've had with the stock fuel pump.
This is what keeps happening; ... Fuel pump "Does not" prime (With a Walbro 255, trust me .. you will hear it prime lol) and takes me about ten minutes to get the engine to turn over, and once the engine turns over ... it runs like a champ! Just about everywhere I go, if I leave the car sitting too long ... it won't start and again, I wait ten min. till it turns over again.
I've checked the fuel pump wires with a circuit tester and the only wire that lights up is the power wire (Yellow/Black/two grey dots). Now I don't know if this is weird but the fuel pump wires and only the fuel pump wires are "extreamly" hot! I don't know if their suppose to be hot but they are lol. And if I give it full throtle in low RPMs (1500 - 2000 RPMs), it bogs.
I'm stuck and I need help. If anyone out there can help me, I would really appreciate it and reputation will be given.
Thank you,
Alex H.

Have you checked the main relay because isn't that what cues the fuel pump to turn on?
I can hear my Walboro all the time running, espc when you turn the key before you start the car. My stock one I never heard.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

sounds like something is shorted out. replace the fuse, replace the main relay, and check the wiring....one or more of those will be your problem....BTW if the wires that go the fuel pump are hot, the ones inside the gas tank are hot as well....not good!!!

Alex,
It could be a couple of things. Start with the easy stuff..
1. Remove and clean the thermostat ground.
2. Re solder or replace main relay.
3. Remove electrical portion of ignition switch and clean and check solder joints.
The reason the wiring is HOT is because you are running a Walbro 255 which draws more amps than stock fuel pump did. Not enough to blow the 10Amp fuse but close..

I was doing some reseach today on the main relay and noticed something that caught my attention. When I was using my circuit tester to check all the fuses (Under dash and under hood) and all the wires leading to the fuel pump, I also checked the main relay. Now I didn't open up the relay to check all the soder points but when I put the circuit tester on the wires connected to the relay, I noticed that the light turned real "dim" on the circuit tester and not once have I seen a dim light. Can that indicate to a bad soder point within the relay?
