There is a rather large difference in power from 8-12psi. If your planning on running that much, get at least rods and forged pistons. Head studs, and rod bolts are also advised. I'm still a newbie to this too, but better safe then sorry. Any slipups in boost could be deadly to your motor. Also, go w/ 3" exhaust pipes to be on the safe side. Finish up with your turbo equipment first, get your IC and plumbing, then work on the block.
IMO 2.5" exhaust should be fine. you wont run into any back pressure issues at that boost setting.
i'd consider 3" if you were planning to boost closer to 20psi. 3" may cause boost creep at your boost settings, altho it would be relatively controllable with the proper equipment.
considering the output of a 1.6-1.6 litre motor, 2.5 should be just fine. i've worked with a bunch of 2.0-2.2 litre motors that were forced induced with 2.25" exhausts without any backpressure issues.
