Default Buyer Beware: Come In and Add Your Tech Help

The Negative iTrader ratings are flying on TR more than ever before. Maybe its the economy, maybe it's just the way it's always been. With that said, I am starting this thread and asking you for your help. Here is the deal.

Come in an post what a TR Buyer can do/ask for/inspect/etc. before purchasing a Used or even New Part from a TR Seller.

Example 1. Check TR iTRader rating of the TR Seller before contacting the Seller or even posting in their FS thread.

Example 2. When buying a cam or a set of cams look for extensive wear on the lobes, cracks near the key-way.

Example 3. Ask for a VIN # even when the car isn't being parted out to ensure that the part is from the year the seller says it is and to check that it is not a stolen part.

As this goes along I'll be making a write up to add to the sticky that DRMORTY has already provided on this page and then add a link back to that in the other stickies. Thereby keeping the number of stickies we have in our forums down.

Here is your chance to help the community out.

Thanks in advance.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

Do your homework before purchasing a part from somebody, since so much stuff is interchangeable on our hondas its easy for some jerk to claim he has a certain part. Know what you are buying.

Tip:

When buying a long block or full swap take a good bright L.E.D. flashlight with you. Have the seller or you remove the spark plugs and check the following:

Specs on the spark plugs from detonation.

Use the flashlight to check the top of the pistons. Look for heavy carbon buildup, scratches, or chunks missing from the top of the piston.

If the seller has told you work has been done to the motor, i.e. new higher compression pistons swapped in, you can also check to make sure the pistons have been changed. You can see a dome height difference from stock height.

Here Honda Automotive Parts and Acura Parts & Acura Accessories | Acura OEM Parts, Acura Car Parts you can search part numbers and you can find pictures of the components. Those websites also have reasonable prices if your buying new.

They can also give some reference of where something is located on your car

Also when you're looking at a part from someone you dont know make sure they dont seem in a rush to get rid of it or you. A good seller should give you plenty of time to look something over. If someone is trying to get rid of something quickly theres probably something wrong with it.
