Default Tie rod or rack and pinion

Ok I need to know how do I tell myself on which one is needed to replace? My rack/pinion I was told was bad by some people on here. THen i went to a couple of shops like Tire kingdom and mineike. I told them that my steering has delays when say like iam changing lanes or turning sharp it makes a noise in my steering colum. Well one of the guys from minekiee came out to my car and said its the blue one right. I said "yea" he just puts his arm inside my car and turns the steering wheel back and fourth and then says "O its your tie rods". Soo i want to make sure before i getted ripped off with this if that sounds right to anyone on here.

It just doesnt seem to me like that would be the problem. How would my tie rods make that squealing sound when iam turning or clunk clunk noise. I dont know. Just please help me out so i can pin point the problem get the parts and fix it soon.

=============Details on whats going on when iam driving=======
*The steering wheel when i turn it makes a noise like a clunk clunk while iam turning.
*On times when changeing lanes its takes more then the usual to turn the wheel like a delay or something.
*Yea it does seem to give me alot of freeplay.

Man, this is the internet. You're asking us to diagnose a car problem over the net which is hard as balls.
Like I said earlier, check the tie-rod ends. If the boot is torn they might be siezed and resulting in the squeeling noise or the ball-joint might have just come apart. The tie-rod end could have....there are a lot of could have's.
Hell you can even unmount the rods ends from the knuckle and check the rack if you want.
Point is, you need to get down and dirty and work this problem out yourself. If you can't even do the simple things outlined here then just go to a mechanic and be done with it.

i dont think its the tie rods.

and YOU CANT TELL BY JUST touching the wheel

that guy was tryin to rip u off.

he needed to have you turn the wheel and him go under and look.

ill bet its your rack and pinion.

if the tie rods were bad. it would prob shake a little when u were drving

my dad says last time he looked at the 88 the tie rods were ok.
