well, from what i understand a manual steering system is different from one setup for power steering. if this is true, what would i need to change?

more power is just a bonus, however little it is, i just dont like the sloppy feeling of power steering especially at highway speeds.

Cheap way easy way:

remove the pump and belt. Drain some of the fluid by turning the wheel back and forth. Cap the line with a rubber bypass cap and hose clamp. This is completely reversible if you don't like it.

other way:
Swap is a manual rack from a 96-2000 cx. The steering will be alot crisper than the method above.

disconnect the lines and run a small line connecting the high pressure side and the low pressure side together. i hav had my car running like tis for 2 years and have had no proble whatsoever and its not SUPER hard to turn when not moving that is my advise if you are going to do it.
