If the tune doesn't suck you should be able to turn the boost all the way down to 0 with no issue. If the car is well put together you shouldn't need to turn boost down for a road trip anyway, cruising on the interstate my car is at 10in of vacuum unless I get on the throttle.

You cannot go lower than the wastegate spring.

Exactly you wont be in boost unless your getting on it. I always have my car at 24psi and have taken many road trips at that with no issues. Besides its fun on open desolate highways.

Smelling gas usually means you're leaking gas. Do you have any catalytic converters in the exhaust? If not you will probably smell unburnt fuel when the car is idling. If it isnt from your exhaust, your evap system might be bad or you might have an actual leak. Check for leaks first, car fires are not fun.

Check for gas leaks and get a good tune.
