What's this JDM thing I keep hearing about ?

Can someone explain me what this JDM term I keep hearing ? Its all over the place and I don't understand.. Is it like a new motor coming out or a newperformance part ?

I thought clean well thought out cars have allways been in style.Now it just seems to be a way for import people to drop names.I got spoon this or mugen that,a lot of the japanese domestic market parts are good.Most are just overpriced!
