94 Legend - Motor "jumps"
Well, don't buy a Mustang that's for sure. If it's a 94 then it's still OBD1 - make sure the CEL isn't blown (it should light up when you turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine).
If it doesn't show up, get to autozone or whatever and they can hook the diag tool to it for free and tell you if there are any codes. If it does show up then you're probably not throwing any codes. That can be a good or bad thing.
How long has it been since you've done a routine tune-up on the car? Plugs, wires(coil packs), rotor, cap, fuel filter.
The symptons still sound like a sensor to me, or is possible there's a vacuum line that has come off which can throw off the fuel but that usually leads to surging and not (almost) stalling.

if i can remember correctly we had one at our shop once that had a bad cam sensor that was not throwing a cel but we replaced it and symptoms went away

It's been a while, but I seem to remember Hondas would sometimes not show a CEL when a code was being thrown. From what it looks like there is no code for the cam sensor, so if that's borked it probably won't throw anything.
You can still try to jump the ECU and see if it throws anything. Do you remember how to read the blinky lights?
First blink (long) 10's place, second blink (short) 1's place.
So 1 long blink and 1 short blink will = code 11.
Two long blinks and 1 short blink will = 21.
Here are the codes:
1 Left Oxygen Sensor
2 Right Oxygen Sensor
3 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
5 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
4 Crank Angle Sensor
6 Coolant Temperature Sensor
7 Throttle Angle Sensor
9 Number 1 Cylinder Position (No. 1 Sensor)
10 Intake Temperature Sensor
12 E.G.R. Sensor
13 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor
14 Electronic Idle Control Module
15 Ignition Output Signal
16 Fuel Injector
17 Vehicle Speed Sensor
18 Ignition Timing Adjustment
23 Left Knock Sensor
41 Left Oxygen Sensor Heater
42 Right Oxygen Sensor Heater
43 Left Fuel Supply System
44 Right Fuel Supply System
45 Left Fuel Metering
46 Right Fuel Metering
53 Right Knock Sensor
54 Crank Angle 2 Sensor
59 Number 1 Cylinder Position (No. 2 Sensor)

Ah, just found out the "Crank Angle Sensor" is really the cam sensor. Interesting. So it should throw a code if it's bad.
It's also not the easiest to replace because you have to remove the upper sprocket(s) in order to get it out which means be careful not to mess up your timing.

yea the one we had we picked it up cheap because it wouldnt run and there were no codes had spar, fuel , and mechanical timing was dead on.. just backfired and whatnot after replacing the ecu to find out it wasnt that . we started ohming all the sensors and found it to be the cam sensor
