Unhappy Engine knocking? (d16)

I'll make this as short as possible, see if I can get pointed in the right direction...

Heard the engine knocking/tapping when at high rpm, noticed that the oil light was flickering, checked the oil and was really low, put 2 quarts right away, still knocking just not as much or as loud. went and had the oil changed, new filter hoping that 4 quarts would fix it. no luck still knocking at high r p m. low r p m or when cruising no sound coming from motor.

was told by a friend that the engine would need to be replaced

any better suggestions? or where i can find another d16y7/8? and how much will they go for?

thanks

is it rod knock or valve tick? plus for the same price of a new motor you can just get yours rebuilt.

thats only if the crank is still good, if not then u need to take to machine shop or get anoher one, but yet still better to rebuild cause u never know what the motor you buy has gone thru. a jdm d15b vtec runs for $ 350 with low mileage and warranty.

Open it up. Only way to tell for real. Saves $$ too.

a good point on the crank. if it's a bad bearing it could have damaged it (assuming it's rod knock). and like GoldenChild said, you never know what a used motor has gone through, JDM or USDM. if you rebuild it then you'll have a brand new motor!

When the light light comes on its usually to late. Sounds like you have a bearing going.

Yeah your bearing will slowly have more material eaten off by the crank and the knocking will get louder and at a lower rshared_pm... you need a new crank and bearings, or a new bottom end entirely. For about the same price and work you can have the crank machined and run an oversized bearing, but with the availability of a d16 crank you might as well just pick one up and have it ready to go in.
