im going fri. to look at an older 91 hatch witha b17a in it i asked him if it smoked at all any color and this is what he said:

Vtec works well it is obvious when it kicks in. When I am on
it I shift around 7200-7500rpm. It only smokes a little under vtec but I have been told by the honda guys at the track that that is normal even on brand new gsrs because the ecu is adding a lot of fuel to keep up with the vtec. That makes sense because the smoke looks black like it is running
rich. Not white or blue like oil or coolant smoke.

does that sound about right? my firends 92 si also does the same thing so it makes me think that this is true but i wanted to check with the experts for a little reassurance

so the fact that it smokes is really no big deal it is just a tuning problem and i should not be worried that the engine is bad

How come my car surges every now and then because my fuel pressure is low but at the same time I get black smoke in VTEC also it surges only when not in VTEC usually in 5th ger
