why do vtec hondas smoke?? HELP?
im going fri. to look at an older 91 hatch witha b17a in it i asked him if it smoked at all any color and this is what he said:
************************************************** *************
Vtec works well it is obvious when it kicks in. When I am on
it I shift around 7200-7500rpm. It only smokes a little under vtec but I have been told by the honda guys at the track that that is normal even on brand new gsrs because the ecu is adding a lot of fuel to keep up with the vtec. That makes sense because the smoke looks black like it is running
rich. Not white or blue like oil or coolant smoke.
************************************************** **************
does that sound about right? my firends 92 si also does the same thing so it makes me think that this is true but i wanted to check with the experts for a little reassurance

yeah if the smoke is black then its running rich. Many hondas and acuras smoke when in vtec for a couple different reasons. Sometimes when vtec engages it will smoke blue simply because the larger cam lobe allows more air into the cylinder to get compressed this causes cylinder pressures to rise and if the rings arent in good enough condition to hold the added cylinder pressures it can cause it to burn a little oil. Also when in vtec the computer richens up the mixture some and if it richens it too much the result will be black smoke. If you have black smoke the car is running to rich and isnt running an optimal fuel setting therefore resulting in a loss of power. If you decrease the amount of fuel going into the cylinder (on a motor that is already running rich) you can gain power. Basically what Im saying if youre smoking black you should get the car tuned. If you have a turbo charged or FI or even a REALLY high CR and you are smoking black smoke then dont worry about it running rich has cooling effects on the cylinders and can help prevent detonation (your biggest enemy).
so the fact that it smokes is really no big deal it is just a tuning problem and i should not be worried that the engine is bad

How come my car surges every now and then because my fuel pressure is low but at the same time I get black smoke in VTEC also it surges only when not in VTEC usually in 5th ger
