Default Axle problem, wont go all the way in

Ok so heres the deal, i have a transmission with a quaife lsd, it has been fine for a while now, never any problems, but i have been hearing some axle noise, so i went to go replace my axle, and i notice the old axle on the drivers side isnt all the way in, its about a 1/4 inch out, But still locked in. so i get another axle and i try it, same thing. So i try another and its the same, i know its not right, and i need to figure it out. Here is what it looks like, this is a picture from someone else with the same problem, but they dont know the cause either,

Im going to try another axle after work tonight, but im not sure whats going on.

I've had this happen to me before, what I did was jacked it up a lil bit, grabbed a rubber mallet and hit it on the metal part and it went in... Just a suggestion...

I tried to tap it in, but I'm going to get someone else there to hold the hub so I can try again

Also, I removed the clip on the end of the axle just to see if it would go in and still wouldn't

prolly not the problem for you but this happen to me. mine wouldnt go in because of the balljoin assembly where the bottom of the spindle connects to the control arm was coming out of the spindle because the C clip cam off. It made the assembly come up out of the spindle and was in between the axle and spindle. I had to hamer it back down. This was on a 91 ef. hope this helps out if nothing else does.

if you havent got it yet pull it back out and check the spline what happens alot is at the part store they drop it or something and the splines on that side will be a little smashed. just a suggestion. but pull it out and check if you she it smashed a little a quick few swipes with a triangle file should work and straighten out the splines

Do you have a micrometer? If so, check the depth from the outside of the seal to the bottom of the "cup" in the LSD. Compare that to the length of the splines and see which is longer. If the spline is longer, it ain't gonna go all the way in. If the spline is shorter, get out a file and make the end more conical. Maybe that will allow it to slip in more, maybe not but it is worth a try on the old cv axle.

If it just won't go in, it doesn't have to. As long as the seal is locked in and riding on a smooth portion of the axle, it won't leak nor will it back out. Good luck!

Thanks for the help, here's what I got, I've tried 3 axles so far, I have inspected all the splines and they look good, I haven't checked the depth but I will tonight. This differental with other axles has sealed flush, so I know somethig is not right, plus I think it's binding. I'm typing this on my phone so it's hard to explain, but I'm going to mess with it some more after work
