Default smoke out the valve cover!!!

Ok so my motor got timed..it was running fine..I was driving then it over heated....I turned my car off quick then I pull over and turn it back on then open the hood then I see smoke coming out the valve cover u know where u can put a little filter....I have a hose there and smoke was coming out that hose...what could it be? All I did was chance my head gasket and take the head to the machine shop..also my car is like sputtering I don't know why?? Any help?

sounds to me like fried rings...you are getting crank case pressure released through your valve cover, which means air/smoke is getting past your cylinder walls. could be a hole burnt in a piston too.

are you sure that the head was torqued correctly. was it a reputable machine shop that did your head. did they also machine the block? the head gasket could be blown again as well.

the reason for the rough idle is because of little to 0 compression in one or more of your cylinders. you need to do a compression test to find out which one/ones.

let me know if you have any more ?'s

I really don't think it is my rings because just before I took my head off I didn't smoke at idle...

if you overheated the car and you stated that it shut off. which usually means that it got so hot that the motor locked up. that could fuck your rings! and have you checked your compression yet? that will tell you which cylinder/cylinders is fucked. that is probably why its shaking. you are getting blow by like a bitch. not good. as i stated before that is crank case pressure in the bottom end coming past your rings! bottom end is possibly shot. could just be a blown head gasket tho. have you checked the coolant/oil. are either of them mixed??

+1 on the rings, they more than likely got fried due to the high engine tempatures due to the overheating. My car a cpl years back smoked out the valvecover, but I had broken rings but mine never overheated it was just due for a rebuild
