top dead center, it is when the #1 piston is at the top of the intake stroke, or exhaust i am not sure. i have a haynes manual i suggest you get one. g/l.

You should def. NOT be doing this If you don't even know how to time your engine. Did you torque everything down to Spec and in Steps??

the head determines which stroke it is, intake or exhaust, not the block alone.

First, as long as the number one cylinder is fully extended and can't move anymore up, and as long as it isn't starting to go down, you should see a mark on your crank pulley that lines up with a pointer on the plastic timing chain cover. Second, line up your cam pulleys, it looks like they are aftermarket. They should have cam with instructions on how to line them up. If not, they may have an indication of what is up. Make sure that they point directly up (90 degrees) from the top of the head (aka, the valve cover mating surface). After you have made sure that all of those marks are lined up perfectly, you can then stretch the belt over the intake cam, then over the exhaust cam, and behind the tensioner.

Here's a picture. Don't mind what is typed on the picture, just look at the gears.

Spin the crank pulley untill u see 3 lil lines after the three single lines u will see 1 lil line by it self, line that lil line with the arrow on the lower timing belt cover and that is TDC then all u have to do is rotate the camshafts as stated above then put your timing belt on, rotate the engine by hand three complete rotations then line that single mark back on the crank pulley to the arrow on the timing belt cover. If your cams are facing up and in and u have the crank pulley rt on that mark, then all u hae to do is loosen the tensioner pulley bolt rotate the motor three teeth then tighten the tensioner pulley bolt and your done. Hope this helps
