So I have been toying with the idea of building a car for the Grassroots Motorsports $2009 challenge (Kumho Tires Grassroots Motorsports $2009 Challenge: Grassroots Motorsports Magazine) I decided to go with an EG hatch for my platform, as I have always liked the looks and they are plenty lightweight. For the engine, I'm going with an ls, primarily due to the low price and high availability.

I have a budget of $1000 for the engine build with a goal of 150whp. I know this is pretty much impossible, but I want to see how close I can get. Below is the list as I have it right now, primarily used and ebay parts. Please excuse any glaring omissions, this is my first b series build, I am trying to learn as I go.

p30/p3 pistons $100(used)
? cams $200 est(used)
cam gears $75
valve springs/retainers $200
used skunk2/obx/ebay intake manifold $150
ebay header $75
gasket kit/timing belt/misc $200

I welcome any ideas or suggestions from you experts here. Once I have a budget and start acquiring parts, I will start a build thread to let you guys watch the project progress.

for all the money you would spend on ls aftermarket cams and valve train you will get same power from a STOCk vtec head building a ls head is a waste of money..1K is plenty $ to build a 170Whp motor easy good luck with your project

 

I was under the impression building a LSvetec would be over my budget, but I will definitely keep an eye out for a vtec head, as that would be quite a bit better since I plan on daily driving the car after. Thanks for the input!

96 ls block (traded nitrous bottle)
pr3 pistons (60 used)
96 gsr head (got it when I did my build)
1st gen skunk 2 intake (140 used)
gsr tranny (305 ebay bad 5th ls 5th now)
no name headers (traded oem headers 70 new on e bay)

over 9k on build runs like a champ & Iv beata few h22 in eg's and b18c5 in eg so Im 100% sure it will make the numbers you want.

 

What about a stock ls with a home made turbo kit?
