if it stalls, then I would say it is the clutch. I had a 73 super beetle that did that; the clutch broke into pieces when we removed it!! different car, I know but it is the same symptom. hopefully you'll get other opinions...

Is it a cable or hydro tranny, to know that would help. Anyhow it dosent sound like the clutch to me, could be a bearing in the tranny that is bad alowing the tranny to grind ,and after driveing it, now lock in fourth. Anyway if you need help, call or pm me, my contact info is in my sig and my name is Cory.

could be the throw out bearing is bad or you broke one of the springs on the clutch. happened to my friends DA9 and the spring completely broke on him.

It could be that return spring inside the tranny not to mention some bad synchros...have you checked the fluid at all or even drained and replaced it to make sure it is clean and at the right level?
