I opened up my valve cover to do a valve adjustment and when removed the valves and all other internals were completely covered in sludge. What would possibly cause this? Any fixes? I also found sludge in the exhaust when that was removed. Does this mean everything is probably clogged as well? Thanks for any help.

sludge in the exhaust?? Do you mean black soot or actual wet sludge?
Id do a compression test but I think you just havent changed your oil regularly.

Like black soot actually. The oil has been changed regularly since buying it with 40000miles on it as well as all other periodic maintenances.

If you have sludge whoever had it did not change the oil regularly.Carbon is going to happen regardless. It should be cleaned from the throttle body and intake around every 30k.

Your cars fine then just start changing your oil regularly or even run a cleaner oil through the car.

This morning I used a bottle Gunk that circulates at idle for five minutes and then is expelled as well as the old oil and filter with it. I then put in 2quarts of 5/30 and one of Marvel Mystery oil in the crankcase and a little Marvel in the gas tank too. It runs noticeably better but it bucks upon acceleration so Im thinking to change the oil and flush again in about 1500 miles. Just still wondering if other internals could be just as clogged. I guess its possible that when I bought it it had never been changed cause the tranny fluid had never been changed at 40000 either. I dont wanna scrap my engine with 75000 miles on it.

If you have the time and tools you could pull the oil pan and clean it and make sure the screen isnt plugged up at all. Other than that it should be ok.

I run a bottle of Rislone through my engines once a year. It loosens the sludge and cleans the engine. It also cleans and quiets noisy hydro lifters. I know it sounds like I work for them but I dont. This stuff really work.
