Most vehicles with Vtec you can't really "feel" it without the proper head work. If you were to upgrade your camshafts to a step or two higher then you would be able to feel it. Also with the surging at idle... check your EGR valve, I believe that might have something to do with it.

I may be having this same problum. I am getting a new
solenoid today and hope it works.

I am sure you will not hear vtec kick in that hard but at 5700 rpm you should hear the motor tone change. So you may not feel any thing big, but you should be able to hear it.

Try takeing off the plug and get some wire, put one end into the plug and the other to the + side of your batt. It should click, if not then it is bad. There are also a billion and one othere things it could be.

Check all of the sensor on your intake, my buddy had the same problem on his gsr and it was the egr i believe. You won't necessarily hear the vtec either.

Sure you will, the cam is changing to the vtec lob. It's not as loud as a DOHC but you will hear it.

And he may not have an EGR. Not all Y8's have them.
