Default stupid question for hatch owners!

So i got a 92 hatch Dx...

normal everyday driving, the car smells fine. Rev it once or twice, hit high rpm
s, nothing...
However, as soon as i start driving like a maniac, especially in long pulls (i got a d16y8 w/ Dx tranny, I/H stock exhaust), i smell the exhaust in the car, not crazy like it's smokin', just I smell it...

Also, have you guyz noticed that when u ride hard, the shift boot gets hotter!?!? like you can feel the transmission's heat dispersion through the shifter boot...

Anyways, I understand that the car isn't air proof and everything, but am i the only one expereincing this phenomena when pushing on the motor?? or do other hatch owners have a similar experience?

if unusual thing, what could be the cause? just shitty aerodynamics? or 16 year old exhaust that needs attention?

the heat on the shifter is because it practically sits on the exhaust...nothing to do with the trans.

the exhaust smell could be anything....maybe its not even exhaust at all. maybe its hot metal. or maybe the donut gasket on the downpipe itsnt perfect and when you get on it a lil bit come out. point being unless its bad dont worry about it. if it bothers you take it to an exhaust shop and have em check it out.

Well when i get on it, i'll get a little bit of smell.. but nothing unusual. Check your exhaust, you probably have a leak somewhere.

you may have a leaky rear window weatherstrip. as you know, when you drive, your car creates a vacuum from the air it displaces. faster speed = more vacuum, higher rpms = more exhaust.

i don't know about the hatches, but on my prelude there is a heat shield over the exhaust, you could box it in more, or put some sort of heat barrier in there, or like demon said, coming in through the back, do you get any excess whistling at high speeds?

I'm on my second hatch and have had the same "problem" with both, I would say it's normal and it never really bothered me much.

if you think you have a exhaust leak have someone cover the tip w/ a rag on there hand. you will be able to find any leaks big or small
