I was wondering if when the vtec kicks in on a 1st gen b16a if it was noticable like the gsrs or the civic Sis? For some reason I dont think my vtecs working 100%. I swear that sometimes I can hear it kick in and sometimes I cant. And sometimes I can kinda feel it and sometimes I dont. And even when I do hear it it doesnt feel like the car is pulling any harder. Does anyone know how I could check this? What are possible problems to fix this if it is not a normal thing? I know I need to change my oil because I just installed the motor about a month ago and Im sure theres crap in it from sitting around where ever it was. Also I did break the oil pressure switch off BUT not to where it doesnt work. Just the part where it clips tight. And Im not throwing a code for it BUT I am throwing a code 2..which is odd to me because there isnt a code 2. BUT theres a code 22 which is...the vtec oil pressure switch. And I KNOW Im reading the light correctly..could I have a faulty ecu..and I know the code 0 is for that as well. The car runs fine idles correctly it just doesnt seem to me that the vtec is remotely strong on this motor. Any suggestions..hell anyone that knows this motor willing to give it a test drive to let me know if its screwed up?

ok please do not get offended by aby of the things i say here i am not judging on how well you put it in just simply throwing out ideas. you might want to check the way you wired up teh vtec and also the vtec cylinoid. you most definitly need to change the oil that does need to be done right away. also make sure that your plug for the vtec is snaped in tight as well. other than those few things i have no idea other than maybe some bent valves have you done a compression check yet. maybe with a few more test you will able to come up with a simple problem that has a simple fix good luck.

The vtec cams in the first gen b16a1 were the mildest vtec cams Honda ever made. They generally are not as loud as the new sis and gsrs. Take your cat off and drive around w/ an open header if you cant hear anything then it definitely is not working properly (anyone who has drove around in vtec w/ open header knows what Im talking about). If it is not working properly check wiring and clear codes.

If I had auto cams does it make a difference in performance? And how would I know if I had auto cams?

yes it would make a difference. The only way to tell is to mic the cams.
Which is what?

by micing the cams you put the lobes on a micrometer and you measure the lift of them. Im pretty sure you can measure the duration like that also but im not as knowledged as that.. pretty much to check the duration you check when it starts to open and when it stops. like a 280 .505 will have a lift of 505 thousandths and have duration for 280 degrees. its a pretty big cam. the mic that i have would go around 5 times and then sit at the 5 mark on it.
