Default problems after puttin in timing belt and headgasket...help!!

so me and a friend installed a new headgasket cause mine was blown and a new timing belt and water pump....well during the stripping of the head, we noticed that when we took off the valve cover it looked like someone was clawing at the wall next to the valves,...we then took off everything else adn got the head off.....we looked at the valves and it looks like theyh are bunrnt to all hhell...lots of carbon build up...and the where it sat near the number 4 cylinder it looks like antifreeze was still leaking out on the sides of the valves...well the motor ran perfectly fine before we did all this....we then put the new gasket in, new timing belt and water pump.,..put everything back together.....well it fired right up which i was suprised it did...once it was started,we let it idle for awhile, noticed that now i was blowing lots of white smooke out of the exhaust.....and there is a very loud ticking noise and when i gave it some throttle the sound got louder....we then shut off the car...took out the spark plugs and saw that there was oil all over them....now we followed everything by the book from the haynes manual with timing, torquing..the whole nine....and now it runs like shit....can anybody help me please.....

wow.so you did not drain the coolent from the block and head first?plus that "clawing"is fine its just the way the head is cut that why it looks so shiny..BUt i guess the first mistake was not having somewhere there that know what they where doing..you sure you got the tube seals on the right way on the valve cover

so you drained it and removed the BIG 19mm bolt in the front of the block to drain the block/head?if so then very good.as for the noise when you reinstalled on the rockers did you wrote down where each went or just put them back in

adn as far as the loud ticking, could it be a possible valve adjustment, or timing?
