I think we really need more of what is happening here.

If the engine is already installed and has been running for some time and you are doing a tune up or just doing a check up on the engine for other purposes and the timing belt has *not* been removed then a timing gun (timing light) would be used to help set your timing by aligning the marks on the crank pulley to the arrow on the timing belt cover. This is usually done by adjusting the dizzy.

If you are replacing a water pump, oil pump, installing an engine, anything where you had the timing belt off then you will need to set to cam gear to TDC, install the timing belt, set the tensioner, and once the engine is all back together and running then check/set the timing with the timing gun (timing light).

If you have the stock engine in the car the sticker on the hood will tell you what the recommended timing should be set at.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.
