As with all engine seals you cant go wrong replacing them but if they are in good condition there usually isnt a need. As for the smoking problem it all depends where the smoke is coming out of. If youre getting smoke coming out of the valve cover then theres definately a valve sealing problem (although that would be more of a valve seating problem) but Im guessing you mean out of the exhaust system. Chances are your engine has seen some miles and with the boost your rings arent sealing as well. Or another although nastier scenerio would be that your mechanic didnt install the head correctly and youve got a head gasket leak leading to burnt oil and/or coolant. Just bust out a vaccum gauge and a compression gauge and check out the specs on the engine. Wont take but 5minutes.

Ive been told theres a little smoke coming out of the back of my car when I shift. Whats that? Also I have YET to see a Civic that doesnt have a smoking exhaust.

Blue/white smoke generally means youre burning oil and youll prob need new rings.

Black smoke means youre running rich or have combustion type problems.
