Help me with my tranny, please!

Default Help me with my tranny, please!

Hello, i have my brothers ls vtec ek for alittle while since he's off to the navy. The problem comes when i try to put it into 1st or reverse. Sometimes it takes alittle effort for it to finally go into gear. Also, it wont even go into 3rd, it would make a grinding noise when you ease off the clutch. I can take the shift knob and pretty much move it in circles. My question is, is there sometime missing that keeps the shifter to shift correctly and accurately from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd and so forth? My brother said something about it needing a bolt or something, i didnt quite know what he was talking about. I am not 100 percent sure which tranny it is, but i think it is a hydro tranny. Please TR help me out!

BTW, the tranny is an S80, which ever that is.

sounds to me like out of alignment maybe the bolt his talking about is the rear tranny bolt,or just all together bad mounts i would not drive it to much untill you find the problem cause if that bad then your hurtting the cvaxels also

I think your onto something about the rear tranny bolt, that was what my brother was speaking of. So im curious, how can a single bolt cause the car to not want to properly go into gear?

the missing bolt allows the engine to move around and then the shifter rods become mis-aligned causing the tranny not to shift properly. Fix the mounts and the problem will most likely go away.

Are you saying the clutch is hydraulic? If you can shift gears, it's usually a manual tranny.

Under the car are two large rods. One shifts gears, the other holds the tranny in a constant position, so the shift rod can go in and out.
Check under the car to see if both rods have a bolt on each end....at the shifter and also at the tranny. tell us what you find.-Bob
