Default crank pulley

Has anyone ever taken a stock crank pulley or even a light weight aftermarket one and had it shaved down to where only the alternator belt was used? I was thinking about doing that to my b18a1 to free up some horsepower but I was actually wanting to do it with the stock pulley so I can keep the harmonic balancer. One question would be, does it make the pulley weaker by cutting it down? Basically, I am not using the powersteering or ac so on the pulley it is just dead weight.

uh i really think you would throw it out of balance. as for the harmonic balancer it is to reduce bearing damaging vibrations.

How about an aftermarket crank pulley designed for only an alt. I take it the aftermarket pulleys don't come with the harmonic balancer??

I've used the stock pulley machined down. I only had the p/s portion removed. I'd recommend getting it balanced if you did that though. I ran mine for over two years with no problems.

I originally had mine shaved because the p/s portion was chipped. I wouldn't expect to see any real gains by doing this though but it is alot safer than running an aftermarket pulley.

^ exactly get it professionally lightened and shaved.. and make sure you get it balanced after shaving it down.

Well I was deff. wanting to do it to the factory pulley but I was just wondering if anyone has done this mod it any pulleys. I had the ps shaved too but I figured I wasn't using the ac either so why not shave that. I mean its just power being wasted by the motor. Also, why would you need it balanced if you use the stock pulley that has the harmonic balancer in it already? I mean if it is shaved smooth completely across the pulley then how would you be throwing it out of balance?
