Default timing retarting?

i got a 91 civic dx converted to 5 spd. it runs well at idle and anywhere up to 1/8 throttle, advances timing correct all the way to red line, but after but after 1/8 throttle it bogs down and the timing retards all the way out and the rpms stay constant, even wide open, backfiring occasionaly.....i have check and rechecked the cam timing and i have tried a known good throttle body w/TPS and injectors and a new icm....i have no check engine light......anyone know why it does this? its not suposed to retard like that is it?

sounds like you ecu might be in limp mode, though you should have a cel. Try resetting your ecu by pulling the power to it at the batter or fuse.

you said you checked the cam timing, but have you checked to see if NO.1 piston is at TDC?

its not in limp mode. and there is no cel and the light does work. the battery has been removed several times and still nothing.

yes i took the belt off and set the timing using the marks and that didnt work so i used a dip stick and the teath on the cam gear. set it at tdc that way and tried again...nothing....i even tried moving the timing a tooth at a time in each direction trying to get somthing i gave up after moving it 3 teeth in direction and getting nothing but worse.

WTF?

what makes you think the timing is retarding? You describe a problem reving the engine, just wondering how you have concluded it is timing related.
