Piston rings, no rod bearings?
Anyone ever do this?
Just swapping out the rings without doing the rod bearings, just using the originals that were in?
I know its not advised by most people, but I also bet someone has done it?
How'd it come out?
The reason, I ask is because a buddy of mine just picked up a LS crx that burns oil horribly, the day old spark plugs are un-godly looking and he doesn't want to have to mic anything. This thing also needs a tune. It will be a quick car due to the gsr tranny in it.

obviously it would be better to replace them but this is done all the time. obviously check the bearings for wear and keep them clean upon reinstall. also make sure you have the walls re honed properly
If you are talking about re-ringing the engine while in the car, you may have trouble getting the new rings to seat in the glazed bores. May also seat just fine, but you won't know until you try. If you are pulling the motor, you might as well do the bearings. If the crank journals look good, you can pretty well bet replacing with the same color bearings will take care of it.

He doesn't wanna splurge and pay for the bearings...I dont know, im trying to convince him.
I am deffinitely not doing it while it is in the car, the motor will be pulled.
Like b16si said it would behoov you to do the bearings while your pulling the rods out, also bad valve guides or worn will make an engine burn oil like mad as well. So check those valve guide seals whle you've got the head off.

also, make sure you ONLY LUBE the inner (crank journal side) of the bearing (the 'face').
the outside (against the rod and its cap, the 'back') should be dry.
