Default oem vs str or ac cam seal/plug

so, i changed my cam seal/plug along w/my vtec soleniod gasket/screen and valve cover gasket and some other gaskets about 4 yrs ago and now that stupid cam plug is leaking again! i used all honda gaskets last time so i was thinking maybe i should try that str plug this time. has anyone here used both that can compare the 2? looks like the rings are larger on the str one so i was thinking that may be better. discuss!

the honda one is like 5bucks just get a new one change it out it takes all of 10mins, and be done for another 4years while your thier change everything again. i just bought a top-end gasket set(with head gasket) for 54bucks.

the str has like 3-4 o-rings to stop oil from leak where as the honda is just the plastic, str is better. but for 5 bucks every 4 years go honda.

yeah but i just dont want to have to change it again in a couple yrs like this last one so i was wanting to see if the str one would last longer. my engine was so pretty w/out that little trickle of oil over there. and when i go to change it i'm going to buy all of those gaskets again and change those out while i'm in there but i guarantee they dont need changing as i dont put very many miles on my car so i just see it as wasting money buying those other gaskets.

Get the STR... Its pretty much the same design as the Golden Eagle one, which I have, and can say first hand it works great... I used it in my LS, and now in my LS VTEC engine, and its never leaked... just a dab of honda bond and its good to go... and instead of buying a new seal if/when it goes bad, just spend 30 cents on some new o rings, clean it up, and replace the o rings... thats it...

thanks! oh, and that makes sense about just buying new orings, i didnt think about that, i probably wouldve just bought a whole new one again! reps given!

i just want to not have to do this again. when i did it last time it was a huge pain in the ass bc all i had was the haynes manual and the directions in there suck. now i have the dealer manual and a good online writeup as well.

I don't know how much the STR is, but I got the Password one (about $20). I put it in on Sunday. It uses 2 o-rings, and fits pretty snug. So far so good, but it's not even been a week yet.

After reading the above post—yes new o-rings!

There's a good how-to on the change here.

The company STR went down under like a few years ago, the other half of the owner is BDL Industries, which is the same cam plug seal they sell. Golden Eagle will work as well. Like he said, change the o-ring when it fails and used a tab of Hondabond as well. The more o-ring the lesser it will leak.

However, as the OEM parts dork on here, I can give you some small facts on certain B-sereis cam plugs that are available.

Part#12513-P30-000 is a the older version of the OEM cam plug Honda has but seems not to last longer (within a few years), but part#12513-P72-003, more of a revised version of the same cam plug, but seems to last for a bit longer due to its degisn versus the other one. May be a reason why it fail.

Personally, I like a little bling under the hood

golden eagle = three o-rings > AC = two o-rings
