well my friend has problems with his civic. he tries to start it but dosent want to start. starts a few seconds then it stalls. i told him to change the fuel filter and it still stalls. could this be the fuel pump? Or, is there another filter that im not aware of?

if you give it gas while you are cranking it, will it run?
does it drive if ^above^ is true?
have you done a compression test?

so you CANT drive it? even if you keep revving it?
and you DIDNT do a compression test?
im just trying to ask this stuff to help narrow down the possibilities....
could be bad headgasket/rings.
could be poorly adjusted idle.
could be malfunctioning FITV or air bubbles in the coolant.
could be malfunctioning distributor.
could be incorrect engine timing.
could be worn spark plugs.
could be any combination of anything else....
please give us some more info and we can help from there.

hey guys i know you want to try to help but i am only getting a little info as well. i talked to him this am and he says that the car does not stay idling and he has tried new spark plugs and nothing. also he did say he was at a stop sign and then i shook and stalled. that is all i know at this point. i know he hasnt done a compression test either. i did mention a possible bad distribitor to him.
i have a similar prob in my civic. idles like crap, if it idles at all, and everytime i come to a stop it stalls.
i did a compression test and the biggest number i saw, with capfuls of oil and battery-killing-hours-of-cranking was 90.
so do the compression test, and either give us results, or tell us if there is a CEL.
i dont want to hear anything till then
