FWD Honda in the 7's ... Finally
Taken from Urban Racer
Monday Finish Line – Oct 2, 2006: Honda in the 7s at Etown NHRA
by: URC Staff
10/2/2006
NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Racing Series
NHRA Sport Compact FallNationals, Sept. 30-Oct. 1
Raceway Park, Englishtown, N.J.
Steph tried, Gary tried, Kenny tried – but the 7-second Honda FWD record did not fall until this past Saturday when Stephanie Eggum drilled her unsponsored ’00 Honda Civic coupe through the traps at 7.957@179.52 during the third round of qualifying at the NHRA Sport Compact Fall Nationals, the tenth event of the eleven event series. After rumors of seven-second timeslips during testing, Eggum gave a hint of what was to come during the first round of qualifying by unleashing a 8.128 @177.25 off the trailer.
During the second round of qualifying though, the 2000 Honda Civic Coupe let Eggum down on the line when it counted – at least for the Moroso race makeup final – when it destroyed a transmission on the line against Ron Lummus’ Garrett Turbos Pontiac Sunfire. Lummus’ victory protected his points lead over Eggum in the Hot Rod Championship, but that didn’t stop Eggum’s team from coming back the next day with three consecutive 7.9 second runs to put away Kenny Tran and Ron Lummus to win the points distribution split for the weekend – thanks in part to a record setting 7.908@184.25 final round run. Eggum’s Civic is now the quickest and fastest Hot Rod front wheel drive Honda ever.
For racing fans, Eggum’s record was just part of the action on tap during a rain-delayed weekend marked by horsepower-friendly, cool autumn air. Not to be outdone, Norris Prayoonto – also behind Honda power in his K-powered Honda Insight – reset the All Motor National ET record with a 9.56@140.90 run that also powered him to the winners circle against a red-lighting Jeremy Lookfosky. While Prayoonto has been 4-0 against him in final rounds this year, J-Look still holds the All Motor category points lead by a wide margin.
Team Audibahn’s Ed Bergenholtz then strung together a dream weekend by taking out his closest championship contender, Marty Ladwig, in the first round and running a 7.530@189.39 in the process – one of the quickest runs in FWD history and the new record for an import-powered FWD car. He finished off his Trifecta weekend with by defeating Ron Townsend in the final for the ProFWD Wally.
Team Puerto Rico once again sent a strong contingent of cars to battle against the U.S. Modified category heavyweights, but not event an American flag strapped to Paul Efantis’ Toyota Solara could prevent the championship contender from getting steam rolled in the first round by Jorge Lazcano. Lazcano then sealed his bid for the championship by defeating Miguel Manero in the final. Meanwhile, fellow Puerto Rican Angel Rodriguez’ unassuming Toyota Corolla rewrote the Modified record books with a 7.32 second ET.
