Default Oxygen sensors, one vs two/law/tuning/ECU

skunk2racing97 has just stated...........
actually, its not that THE o2 sensor is before the cat, its that
OBD2 and above cars were mandated by law to have two o2 sensors,
one before and one after the cat, so the ECU can compare readings
to make sure the cat is functioning properly and adjust air/fuel
ratios to be optimal.
------------------------------

Ok, skunk2,
If by chance, a person found a pipe with o2 sensors on the
SAME SIDE of the cat, would the ECU think that the air/fuel ratios were optimal, that everything was cool, and that the car was
running right?

What do you think?-Bob

it will not work. i believe there is a variance across the 2 sensors that the ECU is looking for. if there is no variance the ECU will notice. This happens when people install a testpipe or gut their cat.
I wish i could tell u exactly what the ECU looks for but i dont know

ok. Say for experimental purposes, a person wires in a small resistor
from Radio shak to one of the sensors; would that provide the
"variance" of which you speak?

I think your wasting your time unless you reverse engineer the obd2 ecu which you are working with.

everyone is right. it will not work. the catalytic converter chemically changes the composition of exhaust gas to drastically reduce CO and NOx emissions into the atmosphere. therefore, the o2 sensors read percent air content of the exhaust gas before the cat and again after.

cheapest and easiest way to do it is an o2 sensor simulator ( O2 Sensor Simulator ). the best way to do it, and have it work properly, is get an OBD1 computer, and OBD2-OBD1 harness, and take it to John Vega, who will glance at the ECU slightly cross-eyed, blink twice, wave his right arm, and your car will have 1000 horsepower. (actually, he will just make an EPROM chip that eliminates o2 sensor feedback, and prob solved, for only an extra $150 or so)
